Through the Eyes of the Community

East LA residents photographed their local food environment.  The photos were displayed at a special event on March 19, 2010 at UC Cooperative Extension.  Participating residents explained to members of their community what their photos depicted and discussed changes they would like to see in their neighborhoods.

"The remains of chips and soda are found everywhere in the neighborhood.  Not only do we need healthier choices, but more waste baskets on the streets!" --Marisela Norte

"Once again, what looks like evidence of a walk to school....The orange juice is good but you can see the remains of a Hostess treat.  Empty calories and an overload of sugar will not get you off to a good start in class."

 "The East LA Farmers Market is accessible by Metro and El Sol buses, which makes it very appealing.  I like this ad at the bus stop instead of the usual that advertises another bad Hollywood film." --Marisela Norte

"I love this sign.  It's on Cesar Chavez Avenue and sandwiched between a '2-for-1' pizzeria and a donut shop.  The choice is ours.  Although, some may see this sign and think of the time involved in preparing a healthy meal versus the quick fix and allure of fast food." --Marisela Norte

"One of six food vendors outside of my child's school.  All they sell is junk food." --Herculano Olmos

"Because the sign isn't clear (it is covered by graffiti), you wouldn't think it's really a market for fruits and vegetables, but for beer and junk food." --Herculano Omos

Is it really more expensive to eat healthy?
"The fruits and veggies we photographed are very colorful, plentiful, inviting and shiny.  But the sweets we photographed are big and shiny with fat and sugar." --Joe and Caroline Sandoval
